Resolution on action to tackle cardiovascular disease

2007/2601(RSP)

The House held a debate on Oral Question O-0033/2007 tabled pursuant to Rule 108 of the Rules of Procedure by Miroslav Ouzký, on behalf of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety to the Commission.

Subject: Action to tackle cardiovascular disease

Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer in Europe and accounts for 1.9 million deaths in the EU each year. In June 2004, the Council recognised the need ‘to effectively address and reduce the incidence of and suffering from cardiovascular diseases'. When does the Commission plan to produce a Communication on the prevention and early detection of cardiovascular disease to reflect this commitment?

Given the current health inequalities throughout the EU, how does the Commission intend to promote regular exchange of experience, information and data on cardiovascular health between stakeholders involved in cardiovascular disease prevention?

What are the Commission's next steps to reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease on European economic productivity across the Member States?

How will the Commission take into account different funding opportunities such as the 7th Research Framework Programme, structural funding and the European Development Fund to encourage cardiovascular health promotion, early detection and prevention interventions, as well as further research into cardiovascular disease?
