Milk and milk products: distribution of milk in schools
1999/0246(CNS)
The Council discussed in detail the proposal concerning the programme for the distribution of milk in schools (amending Regulation 1255/99). The European Parliament's Opinion on the proposal is awaited.
The Ministers' discussion showed that considerable importance was attached to maintaining a system of subsidised milk for schools. Stress was laid on its social and educational impact among young people.
A number of questions remained unsolved, including the method of co-financing envisaged by the Commission. Another matter giving rise to reservations was the list of products to be supplied to schools. A request was made for the list to be updated, in view of the measure's nutritional aspects.
The Council instructed the Permanent Representatives Committee to continue examining the proposal in the light of the discussion that had taken place, and to explore ways in which a satisfactory compromise could be reached at a future Council meeting.
