Asylum: common procedure and internal security. 1st report

2002/2053(COS)

Parliament decided, by 232 votes for, 243 votes against and 42 abstentions, to reject the report by Robert EVANS (PES, UK) on asylum policy and internal security given the essential need to protect refugees. In his speech after the vote, Mr EVANS accused the EPP-ED Group of having caused this project to fail when this would have improved cooperation in the area of asylum policy. According to the rapporteur, the EPP-ED Group had rejected the sharing of best practice, the exchange of national experience and the measures that would have ensured the system’s reliability rather than contributing to abuse of the current provisions by terrorists, for example.
