Agricultural prices 2000/2001: pigmeat, common organisation of the markets CMO (amend. Regulation (EEC) n° 2759/75)

2000/0050(CNS)
PURPOSE: the setting of basic price for pigmeat for the 2000/2001 marketing year. CONTENT: in accordance with the approach followed for the reform of the common organisation of the markets in connection with Agenda 2000 and in order to enable producers to work out longer term production plans, the basic price should be fixed without any limit in time, without prejudice to any revisions that may be called for in the future. The basic price must be set at a level that helps to stabilise market prices without leading to the formation of structural surpluses within the Community. In line with the multiannual approach, it is proposed that the basic price and the standard quality be fixed in the basic Regulation 2759/75/EEC. The basic price should remain at the present level of EUR 1 509.39/tonne. It should be remembered that the specific role of the basic price relates to intervention measures, i.e. the possible grant of private storage aid. Such measures can be introduced when the average Community market price is less than 103% of the basic price. The standard quality is fixed for: - carcases weighing from 60kg to less than 120kg: grade E, - carcases weighing from 120kg to 180kg: grade R. The proposal also updates the article in Regulation 2759/75/EEC to bring the committee procedures into line with Council Decision 1999/468/EC of 28 June 1999 laying down the procedures for the exercise of implementing powers conferred on the Commission.
