EC/developing countries: aid for population policies and programmes in developing countries

1995/0166(SYN)
Following the World Conference on Population and Development held in Cairo in 1994, the Community decided to increase its financial aid for population programmes in developing countries to ECU 300 million by the year 2000. Priority will be given to the poorest and least developed countries. The projects will be designed to enable women, men and young people to choose how many children to have and the period between births, to create a socio-cultural, economic and educational environment conducive to making such choices, to support the development or reform of health services, etc. In adopting the report by Jean-Thomas NORDMANN (ELDR, F), the Committee endorsed the Council's common position, with one exception: the committee to be set up to give its opinion on the proposed measures. The Council is in favour of a IIIA regulatory committee, while the Development Committee wishes to entrust these responsibilities to the Latin America/Mediterranean committee and the EDF under the consultative committee procedure.
