Information Society in Europe: multiannual community programme 1998-2002 PROMISE

1996/0283(CNS)
The committee unanimously adopted the draft legislative resolution in support of the Commission's proposal, subject to the amendments made to the programme in question in the report by Mr Hendrick (PSE, UK). While noting that that it was merely a question of giving a legal framework to the future actions planned to stimulate the establishment of the information society, the rapporteur called for the promotion of a coherent approach to changes in new information and communications technologies; this involved using the most efficient and economical types of action and preventing the exclusion and marginalization of the most vulnerable categories. Parliament also sought to improve control of the efficiency of the measures in question, either directly by monitoring the activities of the committees assisting the Commission or through an advisory committee and consultation group consisting of experts from industry and academia.
