Submission by Member States of statistics on aquaculture production

A report by James PROVAN (EPP, UK) was unanimously adopted supporting a Commission proposal to improve the quality of aquaculture statistics available at a Community level. The measures which require no additional expenditure, involve the harmonisation of definitions employed by the Member States in the submission of data and will allow the Commission to make information available at the Union level to such organisations as the FAO. A transitional period of up to three years may be used by Member States which are not in a position to implement all the provisions of the Regulation immediately. Several drafting amendments were adopted by the Committee in order to improve the clarity of the Commission's text.
