Conservation of fishery resources: recovery of the stock of cod in the Irish Sea, measures for 2001

The committee adopted the report by James NICHOLSON (EPP-ED, UK) approving the proposal under the consultation procedure, with one amendment designed to extend the period of the derogation for haddock fishing until 30 April rather than until 22 March as proposed by the Commission. It argued that it was better that haddock fishing should continue during this period under controlled conditions, rather than have vessels divert their efforts to other unmonitored fisheries, in which the by-catch of cod could well be higher than 15%.�
