Euratom Framework programme research and training 1994-1998
1996/0035(CNS)
OBJECTIVE: the proposal for a Decision seeks to increase the appropriation for the Euratom
framework programme of activities in the field of research and training (1994-1998).
SUBSTANCE: The Community financial contribution to the Euratom framework programme has
been increased from ECU 1 336 m to ECU 1 441 m. With regard to nuclear fission safety it is
proposed to focus more intensively on essential areas such as the use of innovatory approaches
taking account of the safety of new-generation reactors, accident prevention, and phenomena related
to the fuel cycle and waste management and storage. The Commission is also proposing to step up
cooperation with third countries with a view to supporting nuclear research teams, including young
researchers from Eastern Europe and the CIS, carrying out joint research projects, and probing more
deeply into specific research topics having a particular bearing on the safety of the nuclear cycle in
the above-mentioned countries.
