Prohibiting the use of certain additives in the production of certain foodstuffs

OBJECTIVE: to authorize the Member States to derogate from the various Directives on additives in order to protect the particular methods of production of foodstuffs regarded as traditional which are manufactured within their territory. COMMUNITY MEASURE: European Parliament and Council Decision 292/97/EC on the maintenance of national laws prohibiting the use of certain additives in the production of certain foodstuffs. SUBSTANCE: the Decision authorizes certain Member States to retain in their legislation prohibitions on the use of categories of additives in the production of the corresponding foodstuffs listed in the annex to the Directive. The Member States and foodstuffs concerned are as follows: - Germany: beer; - Greece: "feta" cheese; - France: traditional French bread, preserved truffles, preserved snails, goose and duck preserves ("confit"); - Austria: "Bergkäse"; - Finland: "Mämmi"; - Sweden: fruit syrups; - Denmark: "Kodboller", "Leverpostej"; - Spain: "Lomo embuchado"; - Italy: "Salame cacciatore", "Mortadella", "Cotechino e zampone". �
