Information Society in Europe: multiannual community programme 1998-2002 PROMISE

1996/0283(CNS)
In adopting the report by Mark HENDRICK (PSE, UK) Parliament stressed that with this proposal the concern was to ensure additional financing earmarked exclusively for measures to achieve coordination between sectors covering common policies already involved in the development of the information society. Parliament made a certain number of amendments to the proposal. These included in particular an amendment which restricted the Commission's involvement in the organization of meetings of exports up to a ceiling of 10% of annual appropriations, an amendment requiring the Commission to keep the European Parliament informed of the work of the advisory committee and one which called for a consultation group to be established consisting of experts from industry and academia. Parliament also hoped that measures would be taken to monitor the effectiveness of spending on measures to establish the information society in Europe to ensure best use of Community funds for future programmes.
