Development issues and objective 1 structural measures in Greece. Report

1994/2104(COS)
In adopting the report by Mr Konstantinos KLIRONOMOS (PSE, Gr), Parliament welcomed the second Community Support Framework for Greece and approved the five priority development goals: to reduce the peripheral nature of the country's economy; to improve living conditions through integrated initiatives; to strengthen the country's economic fabric; to develop human resources and promote employment; to reduce regional inequalities and eliminate the isolation of the island regions. Parliament urged Greece to allocate the bulk of Community and national appropriations to the strengthening of infrastructures - mainly in the areas of transport, telecommunications and tourism - required for investment, whether public or private. In the area of transport, a balance should be struck between road infrastructure and rail and port infrastructure. Parliament emphasized the vital importance of encouraging private investment and promoting major projects by self-financing.
