Foodstuffs, labelling: coffee and chicory extracts (simplify Directive 77/436/EEC)
1996/0117(COD)
Adopting the recommendation for second reading of Mr Paul LANNOYE (V, B), the European
Parliament proposed that coffee and chicory extracts weighing more than 25 grammes but less
than 10 kilogrammes should be offered for retail sale in packages of 50, 100, 200, 250 grammes
(only in the case of mixtures of coffee and chicory extracts and for coffee extracts intended solely
for automatic vending machines), 300 grammes (only in the case of coffee extracts), 500 and 750
grammes, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 and 3 kilogrammes and multiples of one kilogramme (the Commission
disagrees).
It is proposed to apply ISO 11292 of February 1997 for the determination of the free and total
carbohydrate content of soluble coffees.
The European Parliament considers that the changes to this Directive should be undertaken by
the Commission with the assistance of the standing foodstuffs committee.
