Resolution on the third Asia-Europe Meeting ASEM 3, Seoul, 20-21 October 2000

The European Parliament endorsed the resolution on the third Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM 3) in Seoul. The resolution emphasises the need for respect of human rights, democracy and good governance with a 'democracy clause' to be included in agreements with Asian States. Moreover, it stresses the importance of tackling issues such as international crime and terrorism. Furthermore, the Parliament calls upon ASEM to focus on other issues of common interest, including dialogue and cooperation in such fields as the environment, health welfare, the fight against AIDS, money laundering and crime against women. The resolution supports coordination by both sides of an approach to trade issues and the WTO.�
