Conservation of fishery resources: recovery of cod stocks in the Irish Sea

The European Parliament endorsed with amendments the report drafted by Mr Jim NICHOLSON (EPP/ED, UK). The Total Allowable Catch for Irish Sea cod has fallen and the situation is deteriorating further. Therefore, this resolution calls for alleviation of any hardship to fishermen caused by a reduction in the Total Allowable Catch. Moreover, the Commission is called upon to work closely with the relevant producers' organisations and national and regional authorities in order to develop rapidly a package of compensatory aid to fishermen affected by the measures provided for in this Regulation. Lastly, the Council shall review this Regulation on the basis of a proposal from the Commission by 31 December 2001 at the latest.�
