Research RTD, 5th EC framework-programme 1998-2002: specific programme "quality of life and management of living resources"

PURPOSE: to adopt a specific programme for research, technological development and demonstration on quality of life and management of living resources (1998-2002).
COMMUNITY MEASURE: Council decision 1999/167/EC.
CONTENT: in accordance with the 5th framework programme for R&D, the amount deemed necessary for carrying out the specific programme is EURO 2,413 million (EURO 553 million for the period 19998 to 1999 and EURO 1,860 million for the period 2000 to 2002).

a) key actions:
- food, nutrition and health: 290
- control of infectious diseases: 300
- the cell factory: 400
- environment and health: 160
- sustainable agriculture, fisheries and forestry and integrated development of rural areas including mountain areas: 520
- the aging population and disabilities: 190
b) research and technological development activities of a generic nature: 483 :
- chronic and degenerative diseases (in particular cancer and diabetes), cariovascular diseases and rare diseases;
- research into genomes and diseases of genetic origin;
- neurosciences;
- public health and health services research;
- research relating to the disabled;
- study of problems relating to medical ethics and bioethics in the context of respect for fundamental human values;
- study of the socioeconomic aspects of life sciences and technologies within the perspective of sustainable development (the impact of society, economy and employment).
