Common fisheries policy: management of fishing licences and the minimal information to be contained therein (repeal. Regulation (EC) No 3090/93)

2005/0205(CNS)

The committee adopted the report by Iles BRAGHETTO (EPP-ED, IT) approving the proposed new Council regulation on the minimum information to be contained in fishing licences, subject to a few amendments under the consultation procedure.

MEPs adopted new recitals pointing out that a number of stocks in Community waters have continued to decline and that existing conservation measures must be improved and extended. The aim should be to ensure rational and responsible exploitation of living aquatic resources, while recognising "the interest of the fisheries sector in its long-term development and its economic and social conditions and the interest of consumers, taking into account the biological constraints with due respect for the marine eco-system". One of the recitals also specified that the new regulation clarifies the role of the fishing licence in the management of fleet capacity.
