Economic statistics: statistical classification of products by activity CPA (repeal. Regulation (EEC) No 3696/93)

2006/0218(COD)

PURPOSE: to establish a new statistical classification of products by activity (CPA). To repeal Council Regulation 3696/93/EEC.

PROPOSED ACT: Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council.

CONTENT: the statistical classification of “products by activity” is currently set out in Regulation 3696/93/EEC. This form of classification is known as the “common statistical classification of products by activity” or CPA and is closely linked to the NACE statistical classification of economic activities. The Commission is proposing a revision of the CPA statistical classification system.

Revising the CPA has been prompted by important changes to the economy since 1993. In addition there have been major revisions to international classifications of activities and products. The revised CPA will, thus, take account of economic changes as well as international improvements.

The proposal has no implications for the Community budget.
