Economic statistics: statistical classification of products by activity CPA (repeal. Regulation (EEC) No 3696/93)

The Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs adopted unanimously the report by Guntars KRASTS (UEN, LV), amending at first reading of the codecision procedure, the Commission proposal aiming to establish a new statistical classification of products by activity (CPA) and repealing Council Regulation (EEC) N° 3696/93.

The amendments which are of a purely technical nature are in line with the modifications of the Eurostat Task Force and the Working Party.

The main amendment concerns the comitology procedure. The Commission should be empowered to amend the CPA in order to take account of technological or economic developments and align it with other economic and social classifications. Since those measures are of general scope and are designed to amend non-essential elements of this Regulation or supplement it by the addition of new non-essential elements, they should be adopted in accordance with the regulatory procedure with scrutiny.
