Request for the waiver of parliamentary immunity of Miloslav Ransdorf
The Committee on Legal Affairs unanimously adopted the report by Francesco Enrico SPERONI (EFD, IT) in which it recommended that Parliament waive the immunity of Miloslav RANSDORF (GUE/NGL, CZ).
To recall, on 9 July 2008, the President of Parliament forwarded to the Chairman of the Committee on Legal Affairs a letter from the Police of the Czech Republic requesting the waiver of Mr Miroslav Ransdorf's parliamentary immunity for the purposes of a criminal prosecution.
In the course of the previous parliamentary term the European Parliament had already decided, on 3 February 2009, to waive Mr Miloslav Ransdorf's immunity for the purposes of the same criminal prosecution (see 2008/2176(IMM).
Given that Mr Ransdorf was re-elected and that according to Czech law, if a member of parliament is re-elected, a new request for the waiver of the member's immunity must be submitted to the new parliament, the committee considered that Mr Miloslav Ransdorf's immunity should be waived for the same reasons as in 2009.
