International Agreement on Olive Oil and Table Olives: amendment of Article 36

The European Parliament adopted by 644 votes to 1, with 2 abstentions, a legislative resolution on the draft Council decision on the approval, on behalf of the Union, of the amendment to Article 36 of the International Agreement on Olive Oil and Table Olives, 2015.

Parliament gave its consent to the amendment of the agreement.

The EU is a party to the International Agreement on Olive Oil and Table Olives, 2015 and a Member of the International Olive Council. The Agreement provisionally entered into force on 1 January 2017 and will remain into force until 31 December 2026.

During the 119th meeting of the Council of Members of the International Olive Council (IOC) on 25 June 2024, the IOC adopted by consensus an amendment of Article 36 of the Agreement in order to allow the extension of the Agreement for periods of five years.

The amendment to the 2015 International Agreement on Olive Oil and Table Olives provides that the Agreement remains in force until 31 December 2026, unless it is extended or terminated earlier.

The Council of Members may extend the Agreement for successive periods not exceeding five years at any time. It may decide to terminate this Agreement by consensus.

Notwithstanding the expiration or termination of this Agreement, the International Olive Council shall continue to exist as long as necessary to carry out its liquidation and shall during that period have such powers and functions as may be necessary for those purposes.
