Conservation of fishery resources: recovery of cod stocks in the Irish Sea

2000/0071(CNS)
PURPOSE : to provide additional technical measures for the recovery of the stock of cod in the Irish Sea. COMMUNITY MEASURE : Council Regulation 2549/2000/EC establishing additional technical measures for the recovery of the stock of cod in the Irish Sea (ICES Division VIIa). CONTENT : recent scientific advice from the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea indicates that the quantity of mature cod currently present in the Irish Sea is at a historical low level and its quantity is expected to decrease further in 2001 and 2002. As a consequence, and in order to protect adult cods during the spawning session 2001, the Council has decided to reinforce the protection measures of juvenile cod by establishing 8 additional measures applicable to cod fishing in the Irish Sea. These measures complement those already in existence provided in Regulation 850/98/EC which define the technical measures applicable to fishing in all of the Community waters. ENTRY INTO FORCE : 11.12.2000. The Regulation is applicable from 01.01.2001.
