Satellite personal communication services in the Union: Community action

Recalling that the United States of America had made considerable progress in this area compared to European industry, the rapporteur stated that he approved the Council’s common position which recommended the rapid introduction of compatible satellite personal communications services within the EU. However, he was expecting the Council to accept some minor amendments, particularly with regard to the timetable: the extension from March/April to July of the deadline set for harmonising and operating the frequency bands and the extension from July to September of the deadline set for harmonising the authorisation procedures for systems using the frequency bands.
