Exploitation and marketing of natural mineral waters

PREVIOUS COMMUNITY LEGISLATION: Directive 80/777/EEC of 15 July 1980 on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to the exploitation and marketing of natural mineral waters, amended by 80/1276/EEC, which alters the quorum of votes on the Standing Committee for Foodstuffs to take account of the accession of Greece, amended by 85/7/EEC, which modifies a series of foodstuffs directives as regards the involvement of the Standing Committee for Foodstuffs. PREVIOUS POSITION OF EP: Regarding the directive 80/777/EEC, the Parliament insisted on the need for strict measures to protect the health of consumers; the need for third country imports of mineral water to be subject to the same controls and the need for a directive covering the container and seal of mineral waters. (Parliament's Resolution on the Commission Proposal was adopted in 1971, the Directive was not adopted by the Council until 1980: resolution of the EP on the harmonization of the legislation of the Member States concerning the production and marketing of natural mineral waters (OJ C45 1971).
