Genetic resources in agriculture: implementation of Regulation (EC) No 1467/94. Report

The Committee adopted the reportsby Mr Graefe zu BARINGDORF (Greens, DE). It concerns the implementation of Regulation 1467/94 on the promotion at Community level of the activities of conservation, collection and utilization of genetic resources in agriculture. The various implementing measures for this regulation include a standing inventory of such resources, shared-interest projects funded jointly by the EU and the Member States, and coordination of measures adopted at different levels. The committee adopted the report by unanimous vote. Other points made in it include a proposal for increased financial and human resources to back up the regulation, and some criticisms of the Commission, for not doing enough to promote exchanges between gene banks and not acting to improve the quality of the resource inventory. The committee also proposes extending the programme to the applicant states and setting up an independent forum to include representatives of all the interested parties. �
