Water policy: list of priority substances, protection of the ecosystem and human health COMMPS

The committee adopted the report by Hiltrud BREYER (Greens/EFA, D) amending the Commission proposal under the codecision procedure (1st reading). The most important amendment dealt with the annex to the decision, which listed the substances or groups of substances identified as priority hazardous substances by the Commission and those which would be subject to further review because they might be hazardous. The committee added three more items to the latter category, namely Diuron, Isoproturon and Simazine. It also altered the deadline for a review and final classification of that category, calling for the final classification to be completed before 1 July 2002, rather than 31 December 2003 as proposed by the Commission. The other amendments mainly concerned references to the Water Framework Directive, OSPAR and other international agreements. �
