Fisheries sector in Sweden and Finland: restructuration over the period 1.1.95 - 31.12.96

While deploring the tendency of the Commission and the Council to apply strict deadlines when seeking Parliament's opinions on matters which require in-depth reflection, the Committee on Fisheries unanimously approved the Commission's proposal. The Committee was unable to resist criticizing the fact that the basic text had been submitted to the Council in June, when a quarter of the period of application of the programme for restructuring the Community fleet, which was to run from 1.1.95 to 31.12.96, had already elapsed; furthermore, if the Council was to give a ruling sometime in September, in accordance with the wishes of the Commission, then Parliament would have been obliged to give its opinion during the month of August. �
