Fisheries resources: control of boats operating in the North-East Atlantic zone NEAFC, multilateral cooperation

The committee adopted the report (consultation procedure) by Mr Niels BUSK (Greens/EFA, DK) approving the Commission proposal on control measures applicable in the area covered by the Convention on Future Multilateral Cooperation in the North-East Atlantic Fisheries. While expressing some reservations about the timing of the Commission's proposal (which left Parliament no time to make any meaningful contribution to the debate), the report took the view that this important legislation should be approved by Parliament without delay. The report also stated that, as regards the financial burden of providing the controls required, any discussion should be held within the context of a wider debate over the allocation of resources and responsibilities for fisheries control. In this, the Commission should demand the additional financial resources necessary in order to fulfil the tasks which Parliament believes should be undertaken by the Community.
