South-East Atlantic fisheries organisation: Convention on conservation and management of fisheries resources

The committee adopted the report by Patricia McKENNA (Greens/EFA, IRL) approving the proposal under the consultation procedure, subject to just one amendment. While warmly welcoming the conclusion of the Convention, the committee pointed out that its success depended entirely upon the political will of the contracting parties. The amendment adopted to one of the recitals contained a reminder that the Community had not yet completed the ratification process of the 1995 New York Agreement for implementing the provisions of the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea relating to the conservation and management of straddling fish stocks and highly migratory fish stocks. �
