Translation Centre for bodies of the European Union: scope of services

1995/0099(CNS)
With a view to strengthening administrative collaboration between the institutions and bodies of the Union, the Commission proposed amending Regulation (EC) No 2965/94 setting up a Translation Centre for bodies of the European Union. This proposal was aimed primarily at extending the scope of the services provided by the Centre to enable those institutions and bodies of the Union which already had a translation service to have access to the Centre's services on a reciprocal basis. Among other things, this would enable mutual assistance in absorbing any surplus work which could arise and rational collaboration with regard to specialised work or rarely used language combinations. The ways in which they would cooperate and the arrangements to be concluded between the bodies of the Union and the Centre were defined together by both parties. These arrangements could include, in particular, the Centre's ability to issue an invoice for the translation service provided to each institution or body. In order to avoid any confusion over the extent of this new scope, the Commission replaced the word "bodies" by the term "agencies and offices" whenever necessary (primarily in the amendment to Article 2 which referred to the various "agencies and bodies" that were serviced by the Centre).
