Sugars intended for human consumption
1996/0113(CNS)
OBJECTIVE: to simplify certain vertical directives in the food sector, in keeping with the
commitment given by the Commission, to simply lay down the essential requirements necessary
in order to ensure that the goods concerned can move freely within the internal market.
SUBSTANCE: the proposal for a Council Directive relating to certain sugars recasts Directive
73/437/EEC in order to adapt it to general Community legislation on foodstuffs, notably on
labelling, colouring agents and other authorized additives, extraction solvents and methods of
analysis.
The proposed directive contains provisions on scope, the required contents of labelling and on
commitology. The annex lists definitions, product names and their composition. The provisions on
prepackaged products in Directive 73/437/EEC have been deleted.
