Fruit juices and certain similar products intended for human consumption
1996/0115(CNS)
OBJECTIVE: pursuant to the undertakings given by the Community, simplification of certain
vertical Directives relating to food to take account only of the essential requirements to be met by
the products they cover in order that those products may move freely within the internal market.
SUBSTANCE: the proposal for a Council Directive relating to fruit juices and certain similar
products adapts Directive 93/77/EEC to Directives 79/112/EEC on the labelling of foodstuffs,
93/45/EEC concerning the manufacture of nectars without the addition of sugars or honey, and
89/107/EEC on additives and the specific Directives implementing it.
Furthermore, in order not to block the use of new technologies the proposal provides the option of
invoking the Advisory Committee procedure to examine whether the use of certain processes and
physical methods of processing can be limited or prohibited.
Finally, the proposal retains the option offered by Directive 93/77/EEC of allowing the Member
States to authorize the vitaminization of the products covered.
