European Advisory Committee on statistical information: number of members
1996/0223(CNS)
OBJECTIVE: the draft decision seeks to amend Council Decision 91/116/EEC setting up the
European Advisory Committee on statistical information in the economic and social spheres to take
account of the accession of Austria, Finland and Sweden to the Community and the consequent
increase in the number of members of this committee.
SUBSTANCE: It is proposed that the references to the number of members from each Member State
as regards the Presidents or Directors-General of the national statistical institutes (formerly 12) and
the number of representatives of the Member States to be appointed by the Council (formerly 24,
i.e. two per country) should be removed.
To make the Council decision more flexible so that it is able to cope with the future accession of new
Member States without having to be amended again, it is proposed that any reference to a precise
number of members should be removed from the text.
