Registration documents for motor vehicles and their trailers

OBJECTIVE: the harmonization of registration documents for motor vehicles and their trailers, with a view to facilitating road transport within the Community, improving road safety and boosting the functioning of the internal market. SUBSTANCE: The proposal for a directive harmonizes Member States' registration documents for motor vehicles and their trailers by establishing the principle of mutual recognition of registration certificates. This harmonization should permit: - the facilitation, for vehicles registered in a Member State, of road transport in the other Member State, via the simplification of the checking of registration certificates by the relevant national authorities; - the roadside checking of compliance with Directive 91/439/EEC on driving licences; - the improvement of the functioning of the internal market, by facilitating, where a vehicle is registered in another Member State, the comprehension of the registration documents and the checking of the rightful ownership of the vehicle. �
