EC/South Africa Cooperation Agreement

OBJECTIVE: global cooperation agreement between the EC and South Africa adopted within the framework of Community support for the transition towards a democratic and multi-racial South Africa.
COMMUNITY MEASURE: Decision 822/94/EC concerning the conclusion of a cooperation agreement between the Community and South Africa.
SUBSTANCE: this simplified agreement comprised only a few articles, including:
. a strict clause on human rights,
. a clause on global cooperation aimed at strengthening relations between the parties in all areas (including trade) in order to promote balanced and sustainable socio-economic development in South Africa,
. provisions aimed at enabling the parties to undertake specific cooperation activities.
The agreement in now way prejudged the content of future relations nor their legal basis. It defined a global framework designed to fill the breach before the establishment of a democratic government in South Africa.
DURATION OF THE AGREEMENT: unspecified.
ENTRY INTO FORCE: one month after notification by each party that all the necessary procedures had been completed.
