The Commission approved the common position, which retained the key aspects of the amended proposal, including the EP's amendments which were accepted by the Commission. The Commission hoped that the EP and the Council would adopt the directive as soon as possible so that work on the requirements for the stage from the year 2000 could be carried out in accordance with the forecasts for these vehicles and so that a proposal could be officially presented to the institutions before the middle of 1996. �
