Characteristics of fishing vessels (amend. Regul. 2930/86/EEC)
1994/0129(CNS)
The Council regulation amended Regulation (EEC) No 2930/86 defining the characteristics of fishing vessels with a view to harmonising within the Community the tonnage of vessels of all dimensions.
The amendments adopted related to the definition and calculation of the gross tonnage of large, medium and small vessels.
The regulation stipulated that:
- the gross tonnage of new and existing large fishing vessels (over 24 metres) should be defined and measured in accordance with Annex I to the 1969 Convention on Tonnage Measurement of Ships;
- the gross tonnage of new medium-sized fishing vessels (15-24 metres) should be measured in accordance with Annex I of the 1969 Convention;
- the gross tonnage of small vessels (under 15 metres) should be defined and measured according to a formula using simple measurements that were easily accessible.
Member States should ensure that existing medium-sized vessels were re-measured in accordance with Annex 1 to the 1969 Convention before 1 January 2004.
In order to define the gross tonnage of small vessels and to assess the gross tonnage of existing large vessels, a simple formula was introduced which incorporated only the overall length, the breadth and the depth of the vessel.
The regulation entered into force on 5 January 1995.
