EC/Comoros fisheries agreement: protocol for the period from 20 July 1994 to 19 July 1997
1994/0205(CNS)
The Council adopted this regulation concluding a new fisheries protocol between the Community and the Comoros. This protocol laid down the technical and financial conditions covering fishing activities of Community vessels in Comorian waters between 20 July 1994 and 19 July 1997. The protocol thus provided for the following fisheries opportunities:
- licences for 37 ocean-going freezer tuna vessels;
- licences for other categories of fishing vessels under terms to be defined by the joint committee established by the EC-Comoros fisheries agreement and at the request of the Community.
In return, the Islamic Federal Republic of the Comoros would be granted:
- financial compensation amounting to ECU 675 000, payable in three equal annual instalments, covering a catch weight in Comorian waters of 4 500 tonnes of tuna fished per year. If the annual catch exceeded this quantity, the compensation would be increased proportionately;
- a contribution of ECU 260 000 towards the financing of scientific or technical programmes to develop the fisheries industry;
- awards for study and practical training to improve the skills and knowledge of fishermen, to a maximum of ECU 145 000.
The protocol would apply from 20 July 1994 and enter into force on the date of its signature.
The Council was authorised to designate the persons empowered to sign the protocol in order to bind the Community. The regulation would apply from 29 June 1995.
