Additional costs incurred in the marketing of certain fishery products from very remote regions
1994/0255(CNS)
Council Regulation (EC) No 2337/95 sets up a system of compensation for the additional costs incurred in the marketing of certain fishery products from the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands and the French department of Guiana as a result of their very remote location. The objective is to bring operating conditions to the same level as those found on the continent of Europe, in order to enable this sector to integrate into the single market.
The scheme adopted is as follows:
- Azores and Madeira: payment of ECU 187 per tonne for a maximum quantity of 15,000 tonnes of tuna per year delivered to local industry, namely 10,000 tonnes for the Azores and 5,000 tonnes for Madeira;
- Canary Islands: payment of ECU 151 per tonne of tuna intended for marketing as fresh produce, up to a maximum quantity of 10,400 tonnes per year, payment of ECU 54 per tonne of frozen tuna, up to a maximum quantity of 3,500 tonnes per year, payment of ECU 103 per tonne of sardines and mackerel intended for processing, up to a maximum quantity of 10,500 tonnes per year, and payment of ECU 54 per tonne of sardines and mackerel intended for freezing, up to a maximum quantity of 7,000 tonnes per year.
- Guiana: for shrimps, payment of ECU 1,044 per tonne up to a maximum quantity of 3,500 tonnes per year (industrial fishing) and ECU 1,123 per tonne up to a maximum quantity of 500 tonnes per year (traditional fishing).
Those benefitting from the actions are producers, owners of vessels registered in ports located in the regions concerned, or their associations, as well as operators in the processing sector, who suffer additional costs as a result of their highly peripheral position.
These measures are designed to support the market and are to be financed by the EAGGF Guarantee Section.
- The regulation enters into force on 08.10.1995 and will be applicable from 01.01.1995 to 31.12.1997.
