MEDA: measures to continue support for a Mediterranean Partner

In adopting the report by Mr Luigi Alberto COLAJANNI (PSE, I) on support measures for a Mediterranean partner, the European Parliament expressed a desire to have the opportunity to state its views concerning measures to be adopted in the event of a violation of democratic principles, human rights or fundamental freedoms in a country participating in the MEDA programme. Accordingly, the amendment to the proposal for a Regulation expressly stipulates that the Council shall act by a qualified majority on the basis either of a proposal from the Commission or of a European Parliament recommendation and in any event after consulting Parliament. �
