Control measures adopted by the Northwest Atlantic fisheries organisation NAFO (amend. Regul. 189/92/EEC)
1996/0309(CNS)
OBJECTIVE: introduction of new control measures applicable to Community fishing vessels
following the approval by the NAFO Fisheries Commission of a binding recommendation for the
Community on control measures in the NAFO Regulatory Area.
COMMUNITY MEASURE: Council Regulation 1048/97/EC amending Regulation 189/92/EEC
adopting provisions for the application of certain control measures adopted by the Northwest
Atlantic Fisheries Organization.
SUBSTANCE: the NAFO Fisheries Commission adopted on 13 September 1996 a recommendation
providing for the introduction of new control measures applicable to Community vessels operating
in the NAFO Regulatory Area (Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization).
As the Community is a party to the NAFO Convention, Regulation 189/92/EEC must be amended
to take account of this recommendation, which became binding on the Community on 13 November
1996.
The measures concerned relate to the amendment of the 'hail system' and require fishing vessels
which enter into this Regulatory Area to communicate their target species through the current 'hail
system' (entry/exit messages).
Regulation 189/92/EEC is therefore amended to incorporate this modification.
ENTRY INTO FORCE: 19/06/1997
