Reseauch RTD, 5th EC framework-programme 1998-2002: specific programme "preservation of the ecosystem"

Following on from the successful conclusion of the conciliation procedure between the Parliament and the Council of Ministers regarding the Fifth Framework Programme, the Parliament then adopted its opinion drafted by Ms. ESTEVAN-BOLEA (E, EPP) on the specific RTD programme for 'preserving the ecosystem'. The overall budget was reduced to 2125 million ECU : 1083 million would be for environment and sustainable development, and 1042 million for energy. There would be 223 million ECU for environment and 223 million ECU for energy available for the period 1998/99. For the period 2000/02, 860 million will be available for sustainable development and 819 million for energy. The Parliament's amendments regarding the greater involvement of SMEs in projects were adopted. Several amendments dealt with the importance of ensuring research into the sustainability and quality of water and energy resources and innovations in the transport field.�
