Transport of dangerous goods by road: type-approval of motor vehicles and trailers (amend. Directive 70/156/EEC)

OBJECTIVE: to establish the technical requirements for motor vehicles and their trailers intended for the transport of dangerous goods by road and to achieve total harmonisation of the relevant technical provisions. COMMUNITY MEASURE: Directive 98/91/EC of the European Parliament and the Council amending Directive 70/156/EEC. CONTENT: the Directive lays down a series of requirements with a view to achieving total harmonisation of the relevant technical provisions for vehicles intended for the transport of dangerous goods by road. It contains special provisions for: - the design and construction of the base vehicle intended for the transport of dangerous goods by road and technical specifications regarding electrical equipment in compliance with Directive 94/55/EC, the braking system (e.g. ABS and endurance braking system), fire risk prevention, speed limitation and the body of the vehicle. The Directive adds to the list of specific directives which need to be adhered to in order to comply with the CE type-approval procedure introduced in Directive 70/156/EEC. Compliance with all the relevant technical requirements of the proposed Directive will ensure free circulation for the vehicles concerned within the internal market of the European Union.
