Conservation of fishery resources in the Baltic Sea, the Belts and the Sound

1997/0354(CNS)
OBJECTIVE: To amend regulation (EC) 88/98 laying down certain technical measures for the conservation of fishery resources in the waters of the Baltic sea, the Belts and the Sound in order to comply with the recommendations of the 23rd session of the Baltic Sea Fishery Commission (session of September 1997). COMMUNITY MEASURE: Council Regulation (EC) 1520/98 amending Regulation (EC) 88/98 laying down certain technical measures for the conservation of fishery resources in the waters of the Baltic sea, the Belts and the Sound. SUBSTANCE: The regulation aims to transpose into Community law all the new measures decided at the 23rd session of the Baltic Sea Fishery Commission, of which the Community is a member. Pursuant to the provisions of the Convention on fishing and conservation of living resources in the Baltic Sea, known as the Gdansk Convention, to which the Community is a signatory, the Community must transpose the measures adopted by the Baltic Sea Fishery Commission into its own legislation. At the 23rd session of the Baltic Sea Fishery Commission (September 1997), new technical measures were adopted, which the Community must transpose into Community law. The measures are principally concerned with periods during which fishing is prohibited for plaice and flounder and for salmon and sea trout. There are also provisions on fishing gear and its use. ENTRY INTO FORCE: 17.07.1998. However, the regulation is applicable retroactively from 1 January 1998.
