Registration documents for motor vehicles and their trailers

PURPOSE : to harmonise registration documents for vehicles and their trailers with the view of facilitating road traffic within the Community, to increase road safety, as well as improving the workings of the internal market. COMMUNITY MEASURE : Council Directive 1999/37/EC on the registration of documents for vehicles. CONTENT : the directive harmonises the documents issued by the Member States where vehicles and trailers are registered, by establishing the principle of mutual recognition of registration documents. The Directive : - allows the use of temporary registration documents which do not meet all the requirements set out in the Directive; - authorises the Member States to adopt a certificate that shall consist of either a single part or two parts; - specifies that a Member State must inform another Member State which issued the certificate of its withdrawal; - specifies the exchanges of information, notably by electronic means, on the transfer of vehicle ownership in view of creating supplementary protection against the illegal trafficking of vehicles.
