European social dialogue: establishment of a tripartite social summit for growth and employment

PURPOSE : to establish a Tripartite Social Summit for Growth and Employment.
COMMUNITY MEASURE : Council Decision 2003/174/EC establishing a Tripartite Social Summit for Growth and Employment.
CONTENT : the Council adopted the Decision establishing a Tripartite Social Summit for Growth and Employment.
It aims to ensure that there is continuous concertation between the Council, the Commission and the Social Partners on economic, social and employment matters.
The Council's Decision materialises the decision of the Laeken European Council (December 2001) to hold in future a social affairs summit before each Spring European Council. Informal social summits have been taking place on the eve of Spring European Councils for a number of years, bringing together the Troika (previous, current and future Council Presidencies), the Commission and the Social Partners.
Membership of the Social Summit shall consist of the Council Presidency and the two subsequent Presidencies, the Commission and the Social Partners, represented at the highest level.
ENTRY INTO FORCE : 6 March 2003. Decision 1999/2007/EC shall be repealed from the date of the first meeting of the Social Summit.�
