Rail freight services: compensation in case of non-compliance with contractual quality requirements. 3rd package

2004/0050(COD)

The European Parliament rejected the Commission’s proposal for a system of compensations in rail freight.  The matter was referred back to the Committee responsible.

In adopting the report drafted by Roberts ZILE (UEN, LV), Members made it clear that a compensation system would not result in an improvement in quality in this sector and, moreover, that international legislation in force already imposes very strict rules on rail transport.  Members also wanted to ensure that new rail companies could access the market in order to improve competitiveness in the rail sector.

The Transport Council will now decide on the amended rail package and arrive at a common position.
