EC/Algeria agreement: protocol to the Euro-Mediterranean association Agreement following the 2004 enlargement

2006/0254(AVC)

PURPOSE: the signing and provisional application of a Protocol and the conclusion of a Protocol to the Euro-Mediterranean Agreement between the Community and Algeria to take account of EU enlargement.

PROPOSED ACT: Council Decision.

CONTENT: provisions set out in Article 6(2) of the Act of Accession, state that the ten new Member States, who acceded to the EU in May 2004, should also accede to the Euro-Mediterranean Association Agreement by use of a Protocol. In February 2004, the Council authorised the Commission to negotiate such a Protocol with People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria. The negotiations have now been concluded.

The Protocol has been designed, primarily, to take account of EU enlargement to the EU-Algeria Association Agreement. The new Protocol also includes the new official languages of the EU.
