Interdiction frappant l'utilisation de certains additifs dans la production de certaines denrées alimentaires
1995/0085(COD)
Mrs Françoise GROSSETETE (F, EPP) saw her report adopted on the proposal
for a EP and Council Decision on the maintenance of national laws
prohibiting the use of certain additives in the production of certain
foodstuffs). This Commission proposal was due after the adoption of
Directive 94/34 CE on 30 June 1994, which asked the Commission to set,
according to specified criteria, a list of products for which the Member
states were allowed to ban the use of additives in so-called traditional
products. The Committee received a short list of 8 products, with German
beer (Reinheidsgebot) on top.
Originally, 9 of the 15 Member States submitted lists to the Commission
covering a total of 300 foodstuffs, above all cheeses, prepared meats and
spirituous beverages. Of these 300 products, only the 8 mentioned above
remain in the annex. Italy and Spain did not supply the requisite
clarifications. The Committee adopted 4 amendments, of which nrs 1 and 4,
tabled by Mrs Marianne Thijssen (B, EPP) aim to introduce a labelling
obligation. When labelling is possible, the label should state that the
foodstuff has been produced using traditional methods in the named Member
State.
Also carried was am 2, tabled by Mrs Kirsten JENSEN (DK, PES) adding Danish
liver paté and Danish meatballs to the list. Am 3, tabled by Mrs Anneli
HULTHEN (Sw., PES) asked to add to the list the traditional Swedish fruit
syrups.
